[00:00:00] Emily Race-Newmark: Welcome to This is How We Care, a podcast where we look at what it means to embody care, not as an individual practice, but a collective one, and to see what kind of world emerges from this place.

[00:00:12] Emily Race-Newmark: Thank you for being here. I am your host, Emily Race.

[00:00:15] Emily Race-Newmark: Welcome to this grounding moment brought to you by Dr. Rupa Marya. If you'd like to listen to our interview with Dr. Marya, please check out that separate episode wherever you listen to our podcast.

[00:00:27] Emily Race-Newmark: We're about to have a brief grounding moment together.

[00:00:31] Emily Race-Newmark: To really dive into this, if you're able, we recommend getting your body into a comfortable, relaxing position and allowing yourself to really receive this quote as a momentary practice of getting connected to a part of yourself that may be more difficult to access when we're so busy doing things, producing, and multitasking.

[00:01:02] Emily Race-Newmark: This practice also sets up context for the conversation that follows in our full interview.

[00:01:07] Emily Race-Newmark: Giving yourself another moment to get comfortable, taking a deep breath.

[00:01:19] Emily Race-Newmark: Without further ado, I'll pass the mic over to Dr. Marya, who first will share a bit of context for this quote before she reads it.

[00:01:45] Dr. Rupa Marya: I was just going to read a small little snippet of this Nigerian poet, Ben Okri, that Raj Patel and I included in our book, Inflamed, it just really is such a striking quote.

[00:01:57] Dr. Rupa Marya: "A people are as healthy and confident as the stories they tell themselves. Sick storytellers can make their nation sick, and sick nations make for sick storytellers.

[00:02:09] Dr. Rupa Marya: That has been really resonating with me as we watch what's unfolding right now in Gaza and Palestine.

[00:02:16] Emily Race-Newmark: for listening. If you want to continue with us on this journey, please check out the interview with Dr. Maria. I hope to see you there. We hope to see you there.
